Sivasangari faces Nour at World Championships

Women’s national No 1 S. Sivasangari is feeling confident with her game as she eyes a breakthrough at the World Championships.

The 23-year-old is certainly on song after breezing into the last 16 of the world meet in Cairo, Egypt, on Monday.

Having already dispatched Germany’s Saskia Beinhard in the first round with relative ease, the world No 20 finally scored one over 14th seed Nadine Shahin.

Sivasangari defeated the 24-year-old 11-9, 11-9, 11-9 for her first win over the Egyptian in five meetings.

It is certainly an achievement for Sivasangari, who has equalled her best effort from 2019 in reaching the last 16 of the world meet.

The Kedah-born is, however, eyeing the horizon beyond as she prepares for a tough challenge against former world No 3 Nour El Tayeb today for a place in the last eight.

Egyptian Nour, who came out of retirement earlier this year, showed that she has not lost her edge in beating out compatriot and seventh seed Salma Hany 12-10, 9-11, 11-3, 11-3.

I am definitely feeling confident with my game, but I still need to keep my focus and consistency throughout the matches,” said Sivasangari, who was runners-up at the Carol Weymuller Open in New York last month.

“Right now, I just want to keep my momentum going and play my best until the final point of a match.

“The match against Nour will be tough as she has been playing really well.

“I’ve only played once against Nour, so hopefully, this will be a good one. I really hope to enjoy my game tomorrow.”
