Malaysia go down fighting against Denmark in Uber Cup

Malaysia face a do-or-die mission on Monday, as they must defeat Thailand to stand a chance of reaching the quarter-finals of the Uber Cup in Bangkok.

Malaysia failed to break their jinx against Denmark in the women’s team meet when they lost narrowly 3-2 in the opening Group C tie at Impact Arena.

Despite taking a 2-1 lead, courtesy of world No 11 Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah and Goh Jin Wei, the Malaysian team did not capitalise on their advantage, losing tamely in the second doubles and third singles match.

The Danes drew first blood when world No 14 Mia Blichfeldt defeated 2019 Sea Games champion S.Kisona 21-14, 21-15.

However, Pearly-Thinaah rose to the occasion to level the score with a 21-19, 21-19 win over Maiken Fruergaard-Sara Thygesen.

Jin Wei gave Malaysia a glimmer of hope when she fought hard to upset world No 22 Line Christophersen 21-12, 21-11, 21-5.

The tie was Malaysia’s for the taking, but Syed Modi International champions Anna Cheong-Teoh Mei Xing could not get the better of scratch pair Alexandra Boje-Amelie Magelund, succumbing to a 21-14, 21-10 defeat in just 32 minutes.

In the deciding singles match, Line Kjaersfeldt was just too strong for 19-year-old Myisha Khairul as the Dane secured the tie with a solid 21-12, 21-9 win.

In the other Group C fixture, Thailand thumped minnows Egypt 5-0 to take the top spot. Only the top two teams from each group will qualify for the quarter-finals.
