Nicol to come out of retirement – to play against youngsters
One can’t keep former squash ace Datuk Nicol David (pic) still for long – she is set to come out of retirement just to inspire more youngsters.
Nicol is organising an exhibition event called “The Dream Remains” at the Nicol David Arena in Bukit Jalil from Dec 19-20.
She has invited four women professional players – Malaysia’s world No. 24 Low Wee Wern, Sarah-Jane Perry of England (No. 7), Tinne Gilis of Belgium (No. 14) and Hollie Naughton of Canada (No. 28) to spice up the exhibition event.
Nicol will not be involved in the battle between the four pros but the eight-time world champion will make a special appearance by playing against the juniors.
“I will making an appearance by playing on court with the future junior players of Malaysia. It will be my first time playing here in Malaysia after my retirement, ” said Nicol.

“I’ve more dreams to accomplish looking ahead to the future and this event is one of them, ” said Nicol, who was ranked No. 1 in the world for a record 112 months.
“I’m thrilled to host this professional squash event for the first time in Kuala Lumpur.
“I wish to motivate our junior players and all squash enthusiasts to take up the sport that has changed my life, ” said Nicol.
The exhibition will be supported by the National Sports Council (NSC) and the Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia (SRAM).
Nicol said that the event would be open to everyone and there is no entrance fee.
“This event is to increase the interest in squash in Malaysia. It’ll be a special moment for me and I hope many will show up.”
The matches are scheduled to be played from 4:30pm on Dec 19 and 20.
The semi-finals matches will be played on Dec 20 followed by the final and third placing matches.
