Kian Meng-Pei Jing outshine Indonesian pair in opener

National mixed doubles pair Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing recovered from their humiliating defeat last week to advance into the second round of the Indonesian Masters.

The world No. 14 easily defeated world No. 43 Adnan Maulana-Mychelle Crhystine Bandaso 21-14, 21-12 in 30 minutes at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta yesterday.

Kian Meng-Pei Jing would be relieved to clear their first-round hurdle following a disastrous outing at the Malaysian Masters last week.

They were annihilated 17-21, 4-21 by world No. 61 Ricky Karandasuwardi-Pia Zebadiah Bernadet of Indonesia.

Kian Meng-Pei Jing will aim to impress in Jakarta this week and put their Tokyo Olympic qualification bid back on track.

Now ranked 16th, they find themselves in a race against time to break into the top eight in the Race to Tokyo rankings by the April 30 cut-off date.

The seventh-ranked Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying and 10th-ranked Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai are ahead of them currently.

Malaysia can be represented by as many as two pairs if both are ranked in the top eight.

Meanwhile, Peng Soon-Liu Ying also cruised to the last 16 with a straight forward 21-17, 21-17 win over Germany’s Mark Lamsfuss-Isabel Herttrich.

Liew Daren failed to make it to the men’s singles tournament proper.

The 2018 World Championships bronze medallist went down 18-21, 12-21 to South Korean Heo Kwang-hee in the first qualifying round.
