Vietnam bag football gold after win over Indonesia

VIETNAM have bagged the mother of all gold medals in the SEA Games – their first in 60 years.

The side led by South Korean coach Park Hang-seo beat Indonesia 3-0 in the football final at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.

Vietnam’s heroes were Do Hung Dung (pic) and Do Van Hau, as the former scored one and assisted two, while the latter scored two goals.

In the 39th minute, Hung Dung’s brilliant set-piece was converted by Van Hau, who plies his trade in the Eredivisie with SC Heerenveen.

In the second-half, Indonesia brought on wily winger Egy Maulana Vikri in search of a goal but it was Hung Dung who got the second for Vietnam.

The Hanoi FC midfielder capitalised on a defensive mistake from Indonesia’s Adi Bagas Nugroho, by unleashing a thunderous shot from outside the box to beat Arga Nadeo Winata.

The third goal buried Indonesia’s hopes as Hung Dung unleashed a brilliant free-kick from the right which fooled the Indonesian defence and Arga Nadeo, whose poor save was capitalised by Van Hau in the penalty box in the 72nd minute.

Even the sending off of Hang-seo in the 77th minute did not deter the Vietnamese boys as they held on to their comfortable win.

It is Vietnam’s second gold in 31 editions. They last won it in 1959 as South Vietnam in what was then the SEAP Games.
